Autumn at Oz - Gone But Not Forgotten

We took the girls to Banner Elk, NC last weekend to the Autumn at Oz Party. Once a year in October, the once busy amusement park re-opens to the public with plenty of chances for pictures with the famous characters from the book and movie. The locals seem to stock up on good cheer the entire year, and let it flow freely during this magical two days.

Last year, Jada made the most beautiful Dorothy you can imagine and Ruby donned the cutest little lion outfit. You would have thought being the lion that she would have oozed with courage, but a character picture with her was few and far between. Jada, of course, was on a constant lookout for someone in a costume to hug and ask for a picture.

This year, Jada surprised us by almost demanding to be Auntie Em. No amount of coaxing could dissuade her from her decision. So, Sheila being the Mom she is, set out to transform Jada into the best Auntie Em possible. Little Ruby was more than satisfied to wear the hand-me-down Dorothy dress, even with the massive alterations to make it look like an actual dress on her instead of a very large blue and white checkered tablecloth. Again, Sheila pulled off another miracle.

So, the way looks now, it may be that we are two years in to a yearly tradition every first October weekend over in Banner Elk, NC. Hope to see all of you there in 2009.
